Have you watched the 1999 movie Fight Club starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter? The movie is based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk. It’s a great movie with twists and turns that dives deep into some of the wild fantasies that our mind is capable of concocting. It’s a psychological action thriller (my description) that has something for everyone and which if dissected and studied carefully, can teach us a lot about the way some people think.
Today as I was putting together my notes for one of my most loyal consulting clients, I was reminded of this movie. Why? Because this client, who I love and respect very much, has created fights and struggles in his business that aren’t real. The noise from the created characters and entities he’s introduced to his business have held him back and led him down a very dark path in his professional growth journey. He needed an outsider’s point of view in order to look deep into his organization’s brain in order to move forward without exploding, or imploding. And that is where GC Rosario Group comes in.
We search the business’ heart, mind and spirit with an outsider’s objective point of view. Our primary responsibility to our clients is to overhaul their systems and practices. Our aim is to find the weaknesses in an organization’s structure & operating plan, devise a newly revised plan of action by making the necessary tweaks & changes to increase effectiveness & profitability, and then implement that plan through cooperation and collaboration with others. That sounds like a mouthful, doesn’t it? In laymen’s terms, our aim is to identify the problem, fix the problem and stop it from happening again. Strategic planning, making tough changes, creating a teamwork environment and believing in the process is what makes this possible.
The Fight Club analogy? Our client has created an opponent in his mind that doesn’t really exist. I will not disclose who the client is because we never air out our clients’ dirty laundry. We are not in the business of exposing our clients’ weaknesses to others, especially not to potential competitors. We can disclose the problem though because many of you may be going through the same issue. In saying that, our client created a character from the figment of his imagination that does not exist.
In December of 2008, our client, like many other American businessmen and entrepreneurs, found himself in some serious debt. He was almost bankrupt and was about to throw in the towel when someone told him to call a business consultant firm to try to save his company. He had a big burden in his heart because he wasn’t just trying to save his family’s legacy, he was also trying to save a company that hundreds of employees relied on for their livelihood. Unfortunately, the consulting firm he reached out to saw him as “too small” and “too insignificant” to deserve their time.
He then heard from someone in his church about this guy named George who was helping churches grow in the midst of a real estate crash that was destroying businesses, families and yes, even ministries nationwide. After running into nothing but closed doors, he decided to take a leap of faith. He reached out to that somewhat unknown guy, and well, we’ve been working together since.
I am happy to announce that we are now preparing to enter into our 14th year of working together on his company’s growth. He went from almost bankrupt to explosive growth and expansion. He’s expanded his territory to 13 states and 2 foreign countries. You would think this level of success would have stopped him from creating any more fictitious problems (enemies) for him in his business. Not so.
So what does a consultant do in such a situation? A strong consultant prepares for this battle. An intelligent consultant already planned for this new challenge. A confident consultant prepares to manage his client’s stress. A well equipped consultant goes in with his 3 most trusted weapons in his consulting arsenal; history (a proven track record of successful ventures with his client); knowledge (a mind that is well informed and educated in his client’s vision and mission for the company or organization); mindset (a no nonsense, no holds barred, positivity driven approach to success).
Of course this consultant will also be prepared to battle other consultants who try to sneak into his space like a thief in the night, on the 11th hour. The same consulting firm who turned my client down in 2008 because he was supposedly too small for them to care about is now wining and dining him to gain his business. They are trying to kiss and makeup with the same person their broke up with in the past. Unfortunately for them, clients who work with me (George L. Rosario) are not easy to steal. I only work with loyalty driven entities, teams and individuals who appreciate results and believe in the power of working with those who believed in them when no one else did. I only work with those who are looking for a long term relationship rather than for a one night stand. GC Rosario Group clients know that we fight for them like no other. They do not cheat on us.
In the same way, the pros at GC Rosario Group do not try to steal clients from other consulting firms. We don’t believe in recruiting or prospecting for new business. We believe in attracting worthy clients through word of mouth, referrals, and results. We don’t fight little battles against other consulting firms. We win wars for our clients. Our blessings come and our territory is enlarged because we deliver measurable results for clients that often start out as scared, skeptical strangers to loyal, trusting friends.
So while the marketplace can sometimes feel like an underground fight club, and the consulting business can sometimes feel like a cutthroat fight club in itself, we at GC Rosario Group feel we have become experts at deescalating potentially volatile circumstances.
